How to Efficiently use HOP to Optimize Your Business

DSB (the Danish Railways)

What makes HOP special is that it combines soft and hard data to find bottlenecks. One example is from our former client, DSB. While working with DSB, we analyzed timetables, track information, technical train specifications as examples of hard data and employment contracts, collective worker’s agreements, e-mails, the annual employee satisfaction measurements, as examples of soft data.

One of the bottlenecks we found, was that number of days the train drivers and stewards were on sick leave was too high. By combining hard and soft data, HOP identified that it was caused by a number of factors:

  • too short a time to change between train departures,
  • too short breaks,
  • too low temperature in the rooms in which the engine drivers took breaks,
  • too rigid ways of getting attributed to a shift.

The solutions was to:

  • prolong the time between the train departures to allow for more departures,
  • prolong the breaks to allow for more working time,
  • turn up the heat in the rooms where the train drivers and stewards spent their breaks
  • making it possible for the drivers to choose for themselves when to work and giving them less hours, in return for few slightly longer days, completing otherwise troublesome holes in the schedules

This brought down the amount of sick leave days, late departures, breakdowns and reduced the impact of late departures and break downs significantly.

HOP identified a solution that it would have taken humans a long time to find, if ever, as they would have had to go through many trials to identify the key factors that would bring down sick leave of the train drivers and stewards. HOP found the solution by combining driving plans, length of pauses, the temperature that the engine drivers had complained about to their boss, the annual employee satisfaction measurement, and the annual workplace assessment, maps of train stations, surveillance video, etc.
